A rich diversity of trees is found within the streetscapes, parklands, and private gardens of Cairns, including tree-lined avenues, mature exotic gardens and specimen trees; the high value of these trees within an urban environment is widely accepted.

Trees provide social, environmental and economic benefits. They beautify our urban landscapes, absorb air pollutants, release oxygen and sequester carbon dioxide. They reduce stormwater runoff and erosion, improve climate, can save energy, provide habitat and strengthen a sense of community. Our tropical climate also means that a tree can grow larger faster than in other areas of Australia; as such, care needs to be taken when choosing a suitable species and place to plant.

Vegetation management on private land

If you want to remove or damage trees or vegetation on private property, you may require a Development Permit for Operational Works (Vegetation Clearing). Council recommends that a certified arborist undertake any tree management.

Vegetation management on public land

Council manages the largest urban canopy of any Australian city, with tree coverage of 79% of our local government area. We aim to protect and enhance our network of trees, guided by our public tree management policy.

Pocket, community and verge gardens

Plants are attractive and can transform the road verge outside your home. They create a unique appeal to your individual property and contribute to the overall beauty of your street and community.

Vegetation clearing

Trees and vegetation form an integral part of our urban forest. If a property owner wishes to remove or damage any vegetation on their property, a Development Permit for Operational Works (Vegetation Clearing) may be required.
