Cairns Regional Council is now recruiting for its 2026-27 trainee and apprenticeship intake, with 11 exciting opportunities available across a range of departments and trades.

Whether you're finishing school, looking for a career change, or keen to gain practical experience while earning a qualification, a traineeship or apprenticeship can be a rewarding first step.

But don't just take our word for it.

With no one better placed to provide insight than our current trainees and apprentices, we asked members of the cohort to share their experiences, the skills they've developed, and their advice for anyone considering applying.

Why did you apply for a role at Council?

“I was working retail and really wanted the next stage of my career – and Council had the opportunity to take my knowledge of Customer Service to the next level and allow me to spend time upskilling in Business and Admin through a certificate funded through my employment.” - Isabelle, Customer Service Trainee

What do you like about your team at Council?

“My team at Council is extremely inclusive, proactive with a positive outlook. They also enjoy being together outside of work.” - Zachary, Electrical Apprentice

What skills have you developed through your traineeship/apprenticeship?

I have developed a range of practical theatre skills, particularly in lighting, sound, stage crew and vision, also improving my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skill.” - Natalie, Trainee Theatre & Audio Visual Technician

What's your goal after completing your apprenticeship?

“When a new opportunity comes up, I would take any chance to continue working at Council – even in a new department to expand my views on our role in Cairns. But passed that, this opportunity has allowed me to excel both in my business and personal goals and I plan to keep striving for new lessons.” - Isabelle, Customer Service Trainee

What would you say to anyone looking to apply for a role?

“I would encourage anyone interested to apply. The opportunity to gain a qualification, upskill within the field I work in, and be paid is amazing. Jump at the chance if you can!” - Marc, Admin Trainee

Council's trainee and apprenticeship program provides hands-on experience, professional development opportunities and the chance to build a meaningful career while contributing to the local community.

If you're ready to learn, grow and gain valuable industry experience, now is the time to apply.
