Active Living free fitness classes
Our Active Living program offers free exercise and wellbeing classes delivered by qualified trainers.
When attending a class:
- Wear appropriate clothing and footwear
- Bring water, a towel and sun protection
- Arrive at least 5 minutes early to discuss any medical issues or limitations with your instructor
Please note:
- Sessions may be cancelled at short notice due to unfavourable or unsafe weather conditions. Refer to our Active Living Facebook page for status changes; this web page is not updated for cancellations at short notice.
- Classes are not held on these public holidays - Australia Day, Anzac Day, Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, King’s Birthday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Get amongst it and get fitter at the Cairns Esplanade!
The classes provide an introduction to the sport and are suitable for all levels of fitness. The classes are run at numerous picturesque locations along the Esplanade. From Aqua Aerobics to Zumba Fitness, there is something for everyone to try.
Aqua Zumba
There are 2 Aqua Zumba classes each week.
When: Wednesdays, 5.30pm to 6.30pm & Saturdays 9am to 10am
Location: Lagoon
Splash your way into shape with an invigorating low-impact aquatic exercise. Known as the Zumba® "pool party", the Aqua Zumba program gives new meaning to the idea of a refreshing workout.
Integrating the Zumba philosophy with traditional aquatic fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba® blends it all together into workout that's cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief.
Beach Volleyball
When: Tuesdays, 5.30pm to 6.30pm
Location: Cairns Esplanade Beach Volleyball Court
Want to learn to play Beach Volleyball, increase your skills, or just want to have a fun hour of sport? Elite coaches Joel and Luke lead this weekly clinic. The session combines skill training and play with groupings for all skill levels. Come on down and bash a ball!
Pilates
When: Thursdays, 6.30am to 7.30am
Location: Fogarty Park
Learn the basics of Pilates at the Fogarty Park soundshell at 6:30am on Thursday mornings. Please bring water, a towel and/or mat.
Sahaja Yoga Meditation
When: Saturdays, 7.30am to 8.30am
Location: Cairns Esplanade Eastern Event Lawn (next to Lagoon)
Enjoy the unique experience of Sahaja Meditation, relax and allow the power of the Kundalini energy to rise inside and be in a state of thoughtless awareness. Once the Kundalini is awakened inside it nourishes the seven chakras inside you and helps us have towards inner peace and improved physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
Please bring a mat or towel.
Seniors Exercise
When: Mondays, 9.30am to 10.30am
Location: Fogarty Park
Seniors Fitness is a falls prevention program for older adults who may be at risk of falls in their home or in the wider community. The program is targeted to aid strength, balance, stability and functional movement.
Zumba Fitness
When: Tuesdays, 5.30pm to 6.30pm
Location: Fogarty Park
Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high energy Latin and international beats. Before you know it you are getting fit and energy levels are soaring. It is easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating.
Zumba
When: Mondays, 5pm to 6pm
Location: Loridan Drive Park
Exercise is more fun when you are dancing! Zumba classes are aimed at all ages, genders and abilities. Zumba features exotic rhythms set to high energy Latin and international beats.
Qigong
When: Tuesdays 4:30pm
Location: Botanic Gardens Fitzalan Garden (Collins Avenue)
Qigong is a mind-body practice that utilises postures, coordinated breaths, and intention setting. It’s one of these universal practices that can be applied in so many different ways. Through simple postures, deep breathing patterns, and intention setting, qigong is believed to promote a better flow of qi. With improved qi flow may come better health overall.
The program is suitable for all ages.
Gentle Yoga
When: Thursdays 4.30pm
Location: Botanic Gardens Fitzalan Garden (Collins Avenue)
Gentle Yoga integrates all aspects of yoga and is suitable for all levels of fitness and beginners. It focuses on physical practices to heal, strengthen and enhance flexibility of the body and improve energy flows, breath and mindfulness techniques to gain control of the mind and relaxation to tap into internal peace and heart opening practices, meditation, philosophy and mantra to explore deeper aspects of your innermost self.
Please bring a mat or towel.
All Aboard Skateboarding Sessions
When: Wednesdays, 4pm to 6pm
Location: Edmonton Skate Park (Todd Park Youth Precinct)
During an All Aboard session, children and young people build confidence by learning about skate skill development, injury prevention, skate park etiquette and equipment maintenance. Each session generally runs for an hour and can accommodate up to 25 people at a time, from beginners to intermediates. Book your spot for 4pm or 5pm at www.skatepark.ymca.org.au/all-aboard.
Chair Yoga
When: Mondays, 9am to 10am
Location: Down Park Community Hall, 53 Pyne St.
Sit down to get your body moving with Cairns Active Living Chair Yoga! Using a chair as a prop for support, chair yoga brings the benefits of yoga to seniors and people of all ages, mobility and fitness levels. Benefits of consistent yoga practice include reduced pain and stiffness, improved functional fitness, better balance, all of which lead to healthier, happier you.
Chairs are provided.

Resistance Training for Metabolic Health*
When: Wednesdays, 7.30am to 8.30am
Location: Harald Falge Park
Resistance Training for Metabolic Health improves muscle strength and tone, which protects joints from injury. It improves your body's flexibility and balance while also increasing the muscle-to-fat ratio, allowing you to burn more calories while resting. In this class, you will use free weights, resistance bands, and your own body weight to perform exercises.
The sessions ae suited for all ages and fitness levels.

When: Wednesdays 6.30am (Starts 1 March 2024)
Location: Lake Placid

Zumba Gold
When: Mondays 9am
Location: Norman Park
Zumba Gold is a low impact form of Zumba that is designed for older people, people recovering from injury, pre and postnatal mothers, and anyone else needing a lower impact form of exercise. Socialise with this Low impact dance exercise class, work on balance and coordination without even noticing.
