Doing business in Cairns

Welcome to the Cairns Business Community

The Cairns region boasts a vibrant economy, with more than 15,100 local businesses and over 90,500 jobs. Whether you're starting a new business or expanding an existing one, Cairns Regional Council is here to help you succeed with resources, support, and local opportunities.

As a Small Business Friendly Council, we're committed to supporting small businesses. In 2021, we signed the Small Business Friendly Charter, formally committing to initiatives to support small business, including better communication and engagement, more promotion and development, and importantly, cutting red tape.

We like to keep our contracts and procurement local. Council is a major contributor to the Cairns economy, generating a range of economic benefits for the region through employment and expenditure on goods and services. Council’s total expenditure for the 2024/25 financial year was $519 million, with 89% ($463 million) spent locally. Of the remaining 11%, 4% had no local supplier, 4% was delivered by non-local suppliers, and 3% is attributable to government expenditure.
