Barron Gorge Road
Barron Gorge Road
This project is part of a program of works Council has developed to reconstruct selected essential public assets to be delivered with assistance provided by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Over $80M of funding has been approved for this program.
Barron Gorge Road provides vehicle access to the region’s main power supply of Barron Gorge Hydroelectric Power Station. It is also extensively used by the community for recreational and active uses such as cycling and walking.
The flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Japser caused several landslips and washouts along Barron Gorge Road, resulting in large mud deposits and vegetation being spread across the roadway and sections of the road becoming unusable.
Works on the most significant site are nearing completion however several smaller sites are yet to be commenced due to resource availability limitations.
The road is currently closed to public vehicles and is expected to remain so until mid-2026.
