Flood Recovery Program

Reconstructing for our community
Since December 2023, the people of Cairns have come together to help overcome the challenges created by Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the ensuing floods. Our community has shown enormous strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
The flooding caused substantial damage to infrastructure across the region including roads, bridges, pathways, drainage systems and utility services. Council staff worked tirelessly with many local businesses to rectify immediate damage.
Since then further repairs and rebuilding continue to reduce impacts on the community and reconstruct the most severely damaged assets including consideration to “build back better” wherever possible.
Council developed a program of works to reconstruct selected essential public assets which we are delivering with assistance provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Over $80M of funding has been approved for this program.
