White Sapote is an evergreen tree producing delicious, apple-sized fruit.
The fruit is round or oval in shape with a thin, smooth, green skin. When ripe, the fruit remains green or turns yellow. The pale flesh is soft and creamy, with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. The flavour is reminiscent of a blend of peach, banana and pear. White Sapote is easily bruised, which can lead to a bitter taste.
The seeds of white sapote are bitter and the Aztecs used them as a sleep aid. They are now known to contain narcotic compounds. Seeds should not be eaten.
