2024 election results pending
The Local Government elections were held on Saturday 16 March 2024. We will update our Mayor and Councillor details once the Electoral Commission of Queensland has declared the election results for the Cairns local government area.
Born and educated in Cairns, Terry James has been a business owner in the region for more than 45 years.
He has served for more than 20 years, firstly with Cairns City Council (1994 to 1995), then on Cairns Regional Council from 1999 to 2008, and from 2012 to current.
In that time, he has served as Acting and Deputy Mayor, is the chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, and is a representative on the District Disaster Management Group and Cairns Gallery Precinct Project Steering Committee.

Commemorate a special occasion
Residents of the Cairns Regional Council area celebrating a special birthday, wedding anniversary or other significant event can receive personal congratulations from the Mayor. The Mayor will send a message of congratulations to people turning 90, 95 or 100 years of age or more, or to couples celebrating 60, 70 and 80 years of marriage.
Requests must be received at least two weeks prior to the date required. Please advise the Mayor’s Office immediately if circumstances arise which make it inappropriate for this message to be sent.
