Kamerunga pedestrian/cycle bridge

This project is part of a program of works Council has developed to reconstruct selected essential public assets to be delivered with assistance provided by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Over $80M of funding has been approved for this program.

As a key link within the 664km of pathways that make up the Cairns active transport network, the Kamerunga cycle/pedestrian bridge provided a safe crossing over the Barron River for cyclists and walkers until it was washed away in the flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

Council is committed to the restoration of this bridge to ensure this part of the active transport network is reopened to cyclists, pedestrians and other users.

The new bridge is currently in the design phase so watch this space for updates as this project progresses towards construction and completion. Council aims to replace the bridge while leaving the existing bridge in place, causing as little impact to users as possible.
