Push to tackle anti-social behaviour

Cairns Regional Council is calling on the State Government to introduce stronger, targeted measures to address anti-social and disruptive behaviour in the Cairns CBD, while also investing in long-term solutions that address its underlying causes.

Council says establishing a Designated Business and Community Precinct to empower police, alongside an increased police presence in the city centre, would improve public safety, support local businesses and help restore community confidence.

To support this, Council has lodged a submission to the Queensland Parliament’s Justice, Integrity and Community Safety Committee in response to the Expanding Adult Crime, Adult Time and Taking a Strong Stance on Drugs and Anti-Social Behaviour Amendment Bill 2026, introduced on 3 March 2026.

The submission draws on City Safe data showing 33,300 incidents over two years and argues there is strong evidence that expanded 24/7 police powers within the precinct are essential.

Council’s submission also aligns with key pillars of Council’s Corporate Plan 2025–2030, including a strong economy, a vibrant and safe community, and spaces and programs that benefit residents.
