Kicking off the celebration is the Australia Day Awards ceremony, recognising the outstanding individuals who make an exceptional contribution to our community.

The ceremony honours those who generously give their time, energy, and passion to local clubs, sporting groups, volunteering, charity work, businesses, cultural or youth groups, and advocacy roles.

Award categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

Following the awards, enjoy a free community concert featuring live music, cultural performances, and relaxed, family-friendly entertainment in a beautiful outdoor setting.

This year's Australia Day celebration at Munro Martin Parklands will have plenty of free activities, games and live entertainment. Live entertainment includes performances from Sand & Sea Dance Troupe, Toshi Sakamoto, Tropic Thunder, All in Line-Dancers, Vivien Aisi and Whiskey Boat.

There’s also plenty for kids and families to enjoy including mini golf, a jumping castle, face painting, palm weaving workshops and a visit from Bugzy Bumblebee.

Food lovers can enjoy a variety of delicious offerings from local food vendors, with free, locally sourced bites available while supplies last.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said Great Australian Bites was a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate what makes Cairns special.

“Australia Day is about recognising the people who go above and beyond for our community, while also enjoying great local food, music and time with family and friends,” Cr Eden said.

“Great Australian Bites showcases the best of Cairns, our local talent, our vibrant culture and our strong sense of community.

“I encourage everyone to come along and be part of the celebrations.”

Mojo Street Food is among the vendors offering free bites as part of the Great Australian Bites event. Come rain or shine, grab a picnic rug, embrace the tropical vibe, bring your family and friends (and maybe a raincoat), and celebrate life in Far North Queensland with the Cairns community.

Australia Day celebrations will take place at Munro Martin Parklands on Monday 26 January 2026, featuring the Australia Day Awards from 5-6pm, followed by Great Australian Bites from 6-8pm.

Great Australian Bites is proudly supported by the Queensland Government and assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council as part of Queensland’s Australia Day program.
