A petition is a request for action. Before commencing a petition, consider whether it is the most effective means of dealing with an issue.

Council encourages persons to first attempt to resolve a matter by contacting Customer Service. Additionally, Councillors are available to speak with persons on matters of concern.

Council’s Standing Orders and Model Meeting Procedures General Policy ( PDF, 0.48 MB ) outlines its rules for petitions. These are based on long-established Queensland Parliamentary guidelines.

Any petition presented to a meeting of Council shall:

  • be in legible writing or typewritten and contain a minimum of ten (10) signatures;
  • include the name and contact details of the Principal Petitioner (i.e., one person who is the organiser and who will act as the key contact for the issue);
  • include the postcode of all petitioners; and
  • have the details of the specific request/matter appear on each page of the petition.

Council will respond to the Principal Petitioner in relation to all petitions deemed valid. Petitions that do not meet these guidelines will be deemed invalid and will not be received by Council.
