Casuarina St Bridge, Holloways Beach
Casuarina Street bridge
This project is part of a program of works Council has developed to reconstruct selected essential public assets to be delivered with assistance provided by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). Over $80M of funding has been approved for this program.
A section of road at the northern end of Casuarina Street, Holloways Beach, was completely washed away in the flood as a new minor creek alignment formed between Richters Creek and the shoreline.
Council acted quickly to provide a temporary solution to give residents access to and from their houses. This causeway section of road will still be in place during the coming wet season and residents are advised it could be vulnerable to washouts in a high rainfall event.
Construction has now commenced on a new bridge to provide permanent all-weather access. Completion is expected in late 2026, subject to weather and other site conditions.
During this time access will remain open with some temporary traffic delays. Additionally, there will be some increased vehicle movements and potential for noise, dust and vibration, however Council will keep any impacts to a minimum.
In recognition of the importance of this project and to foster a shared sense of pride and place, Council has invited the community and the Traditional Owners to take part in naming the new bridge, an opportunity that will form part of the ‘Cairns Celebrates 150 years’ celebrations in 2026. The bridge is likely to carry a dual name as a chance to reflect the resilience, identity and recovery journey of the Holloways Beach community and honour the cultural connection to Country of the Yirrganydji people.
