How We Relate - Yalanji Arts Exhibition
Thursday 20 July - Sunday 3 September 2023
Contemporary ceramics and textiles from Yalanji Arts
Located in Mossman Gorge Aboriginal Community, on the border of the Daintree National Park, Yalanji Arts nurtures and develops artists to showcase culture and generate individual and community growth.
Yalanji Arts presents hand crafted contemporary and traditional fine art and crafts celebrating totems and other subjects of cultural significance, foregrounding the deep respect, knowledge and connection to the richly diverse rainforest and ocean environments of Kuku Yalanji Country.
This exhibition of textiles and free-form ceramic vessels shows the current direction the artists of Yalanji Arts are taking. The small group of artists are hitting their stride and proclaiming their own unique aesthetic, expressing their distinct rainforest inspired style. This new body of work conveys how Yalanji artists’ multi-media approach informs their practice with a cross-pollination effect, the designs complementing each other across the two disciplines of textiles and ceramics.
Featured artists include Vanessa Cannon, Lawrence Gibson, Karen Shuan, Lorna Shuan, Josh Williams, Margaret Rocky, and Loretta Spratt
