Red Arrow reopens after major upgrade

The popular Red Arrow walking track in Edge Hill has reopened following a $1.2 million renewal.

Cairns Regional Council delivered the upgrade to improve safety, durability and long-term sustainability at one of the region’s busiest free recreational spaces.

The 1.3km Red Arrow circuit in Mt Whitfield Conservation Park attracts thousands of walkers and runners each week. Coupled with high visitor numbers and tropical conditions the track had experienced wear and deterioration over time, particularly on stairs and asphalt sections.

During the works, 22 native bee hives were carefully relocated and now are located at local schools and kindergartens. Five new hives will be installed to support the local bee population. Stingless native bees are important pollinators, they play an important role in supporting the health of the local ecosystem.

Works included demolition of ageing steps and path sections on the eastern side, which were replaced with new natural stone stairs. The stone provides a more durable, slip-resistant surface suited to heavy daily use and tropical rainfall.

Lower entrance sections and the upper eastern section of the track were resurfaced, and new pedestrian bridges were installed to improve safety and accessibility.

Timber bench seats and lookout shelters were also replaced with low-maintenance materials designed to withstand the local climate.

As a free recreational resource, the Red Arrow plays an important role in supporting active lifestyles and community wellbeing. It offers residents and visitors an accessible way to exercise, connect with nature and take in views across Trinity Inlet, the Coral Sea and Cairns city.

The upgrade ensures the track remains safe and accessible while preserving its natural setting for future generations.
