Families have plenty of opportunities to keep kids active and entertained these autumn school holidays, with Cairns Regional Council offering a range of free and low-cost activities across the region.
The School Holiday Program caters to all ages, with a mix of outdoor adventures, creative workshops and community activities.
Cairns Mayor Amy Eden is encouraging families to take advantage of the cooler weather by getting outdoors, exploring local attractions and making the most of what the region has to offer.
“Cairns is fortunate to have so many parks, pools and natural attractions where families can spend time together.”
“These holidays are a great chance to get outdoors, explore somewhere new or rediscover a local favourite, as well as enjoy the many free and low-cost programs available across the region.
“The kids can stay busy with activities through Council's libraries, Tanks Arts Centre and Active Living programs, there’s something for every age and interest.”
The following popular locations have recently reopened or been upgraded:
- The Red Arrow walking track in the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct has been upgraded to strengthen the track. The 1.3km loop is suitable for a range of fitness levels.
- Lake Placid has reopened following restoration works, providing a scenic spot for families to visit.
A variety of organised programs are also available across the region including:
- Tanks Arts Centre is hosting hands-on workshops introducing young people to film production through interactive and creative activities.
- Cairns Libraries are running their popular free sessions, including Youth Open Mic, Hero Squad, Twist & Shout Rubik’s Cube Challenge, and Roar into 3D.
- Active Living programs include Youth Multi Sports in White Rock, beach volleyball at the Cairns Esplanade, and Aqua Zumba sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
- Learn to Colour sessions will be held at Smithfield Shopping Centre with local artist Cindy Wider on Friday 10 and Wednesday 15 April.
