The Process and Treatment team at Council operates two water treatment plants to produce drinking water from Gordonvale to Palm Cove, with a third under construction as part of the Cairns Water Security Strategy which will majorly expand Council’s fresh water infrastructure, along with six wastewater treatment plants to treat water from every sink and toilet all the way south to Babinda.
Council has the capacity to transport and treat over 177 million litres of wastewater each day. This ensures our region’s wastewater is treated using advanced technology and ready to be safely reintroduced into our environment today and every day into the future.
The Laboratory Services team provides water testing for private and commercial customers to ensure water quality and safety. They test for contaminants like bacteria, chemicals, and heavy metals using advanced laboratory equipment and techniques. The team also supports environmental monitoring to assess the impact of water sources on local ecosystems. Their services help clients comply with health and safety regulations, offering detailed reports and recommendations. Overall, the team plays a vital role in maintaining public health and environmental standards through reliable water testing.
