Trades & Animal Management

The Animal Management (ACE) facility at Council provides comprehensive work experience that covers a range of animal care and administrative tasks. These opportunities include feeding, cleaning, and assisting with daily animal care routines, as well as learning about animal behavior and providing enrichment to support their wellbeing. Participants will gain hands-on experience in offering veterinary support, updating animal health records, and coordinating care as needed. Additionally, the work experience provides insights into animal intake and rehoming, with opportunities to assist in general administration and customer service tasks. Participants will also develop an understanding of relevant legislation and community safety regulations, learning how they apply to animal management and ensuring public safety.

The Construction team at Council is responsible for managing and executing civil infrastructure projects, from planning to completion. They oversee construction processes, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Work experience opportunities offer hands-on exposure to various aspects of construction, including site management, project coordination, and quality control, providing valuable insights into the construction industry and project execution.

The Electrical team at Council is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems across the organisation’s facilities. They ensure that all electrical infrastructure, including lighting, power distribution, and safety systems, operates efficiently and safely. Work experience opportunities offer hands-on involvement in electrical troubleshooting, system upgrades, and safety compliance, providing valuable exposure to real-world electrical engineering practices and the development of problem-solving skills while in the field.

The horticulture work experience at Council offers exposure to three key teams: the Nursery team, Flecker Gardens team, and Botanic Precinct team. The Nursery team cares for plants in the conservatory, manages rotating plant collections, and propagates rare and exotic plants. The Flecker Gardens team maintains the Flecker Garden, Gondwana Evolution Garden, and Fitzalan Reserve. The Botanic Precinct team manages botanical areas such as Collins Avenue streetscapes, the Tanks Markets Promenade, and the fresh and saltwater lakes at Centenary Lakes. This experience provides hands-on involvement in various aspects of plant care and botanical management.

The Mechanical team at Council is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and optimisation of all mechanical systems and equipment within the organisation. This includes managing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, pumps, and other machinery critical to the operation of facilities. Work experience opportunities provide hands-on learning in troubleshooting, system diagnostics, and mechanical repairs, offering valuable exposure to real-world engineering and maintenance practices.

Water Services is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and enhancement of the water reticulation system, which includes water mains, water meters, and rural water treatment plants. The team is divided into several sub-teams, including Planned Works, Reactive Works, and Demand Management, each focused on different aspects of water service management. Participants gain hands-on experience, practical knowledge of water services and exposure to innovative technologies.
