Young people aged between 10 and 24 make up 20 per cent of the Cairns population - around 29,000 people.

Council supports Cairns children and young people to get involved in sporting activities, the arts and representing their region and views in a number of ways.

Free activities like street soccer, edor, skateboarding, bouldering and beach volleyball are available most days of the week through Council's Active Living program and the Space + Place program; a partnership between Council, the police and community organisations.

Young people with an interest in politics, science and advocacy have a platform at the Cairns Youth Climate Summit which is held every two years to give a voice to our future leaders.

Cairns Libraries have many resources, activities and programs for young people from free after-school internet access for older children and teenagers to First Five Forever storytime for our youngest residents.

Arts-minded young people have many opportunities to shine in Cairns through the Flame.Arts program, Cairns Children's Festival and the annual Energy Exhibition of high school art at Tanks Arts Centre.

Council also calls on its youngest residents for inspiration and design in the Youth Urban Arts Project.

Cairns Young Mayors Program

The new partnership between Cairns Regional Council and the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) will get young people more involved in local decision-making.

The Young Mayors program will support people aged 17 and under to get elected to a Youth Council, positioning them as decision-makers on issues that impact their future.

Cairns joins Mackay (QLD), Horsham (VIC) and Wollongong (NSW) to pilot the program in Australia, with plans to scale to councils across the country.
