Council has taken a major step toward long-term water sustainability by endorsing the development of the Cairns Water Efficiency Strategy 2026-2035.
A key element of this initiative is the formation of an Advisory Group to ensure broad stakeholder engagement and expert input and will include representatives from the State Government, industry, tourism, environmental sectors, First Nations, and youth.
The Advisory Group’s role is to help identify practical, socially acceptable, and cost-effective water-saving measures.
Mayor Amy Eden has been appointed to chair the Advisory Group, which will play a key role in shaping the strategy to ensure it is relevant, comprehensive, and aligns with both community and industry needs.
This inclusive approach reflects the Council’s commitment to collaboration and community engagement in managing future water challenges.
Building on the success of the 2016-2025 strategy, the new plan will address issues like population growth, climate change, and evolving water technologies.
The strategy will focus on demand management, education, and network efficiency.
