Showcasing local stories and talent
Aspiring filmmakers are encouraged to enter the 2025 Understory Film Festival and Understory High, with entries now open for both programs.
Now in its 12th year, the festival is a cornerstone of the region’s screen culture, providing a platform for emerging and established filmmakers to share original stories.
Since its launch, Understory has received 623 submissions, screened 205 finalists, and presented 115 awards.
Championing local creativity
Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said the festival is a celebration of local storytelling and creative expression.
“It is always exciting to see the originality and passion emerging from our schools and young filmmakers,” she said.
“Cairns could very well be the launchpad for Australia’s next big screen success.
This is not just about making films, it is about championing our stories, our communities and the incredible creativity of our region.”
Spotlight on young filmmakers
Returning in 2025 is Understory High, a dedicated program for students in Years 7 to 12.
Launched in 2023, the youth competition offers students the opportunity to have their short films judged by professionals and screened at a dedicated awards night in October.
Significant cash prizes are up for grabs, with entries for Understory High closing on 1 September. Submissions for the main festival close on 13 September.
Festival events and Industry Exchange
Shortlisted entries for the Understory Film Festival will be screened during a special evening under the stars at the Tanks Arts Centre, where winners — including the audience-voted People’s Choice — will be announced.
The Industry Exchange returns in November, offering workshops and panel discussions for filmmakers, students and film lovers.
“These types of forums are where ideas spark,” Mayor Eden said.
“It is such a buzz to see the next generation getting involved, asking questions and being inspired to tell their own stories.”
Past winners and festival Impact
Last year’s festival celebrated a range of outstanding local talent.
Georgia Willis was awarded the Essential Screen Skills Best Film and Tiago Flores received the People’s Choice at Understory High.
At the main festival, Jannah Dryden took out both the Best Film and People’s Choice Awards for her standout work.
Open to novices and experienced filmmakers
Whether you are an experienced filmmaker or picking up a camera for the first time, Understory offers a chance to be recognised, connect with industry professionals and contribute to the region’s film culture.
