Cairns families will have access to more educational and engaging toys, thanks to generous donations collected during Council’s free green waste disposal events.

During the February and May drop-off periods, voluntary contributions from 8,346 vehicles helped raise $3094.05, which was donated to the Cairns Toy Library.

Supporting local families

Mayor Amy Eden presented the cheque to the Toy Library, saying she personally knows the value these services provide.

“I grew up using a toy library, so I understand how important they are for families and just how much fun they are for the children,” Cr Eden said.

“They are more than shelves of toys, they are hubs for learning, imagination, and connection.
Looking back, I don’t know what was more exciting as a kid, checking out all the toys available or actually taking them home for the week.”

Cr Eden said toy libraries ease financial pressure on families while promoting sustainability.

Boosting play and learning

Cairns Toy Library founder Ailsa Horsburgh said the donation would help upgrade their toy collection and benefit more local families.

“Play is not the side path to learning – play is learning,” Ms Horsburgh said.
“The Toy Library makes play easier and more accessible for our diverse community of families.”

The Cairns Toy Library is located at 208 Pease Street, Manoora, and is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 9am to 11am.
