Recognising the vital role small businesses play in our local economy and community life, Cairns Regional Council has reaffirmed its participation in the Small Business Friendly Council Program by endorsing a renewed Small Business Friendly Commitment.

Continuing the original Charter signed in 2021 in partnership with the Cairns Chamber of Commerce, the new Commitment adapts a more dynamic, practical, and flexible approach.

Delivered through the Office of the Queensland Small Business Commissioner’s Small Business Friendly (SBF) Program, the refreshed framework is designed to evolve with the needs of the business community, offering improved tools, clear commitments, and a focus on continuous improvement.

By cutting red tape, creating connections, and driving local spending, the initiative is already making a tangible difference for small businesses in Cairns.

Highlights from the past year include:

  • Cairns 2025 Meeting the Buyer: Connected 88 local small business suppliers with major buyers and procurement teams, helping businesses unlock new opportunities and build valuable partnerships.
  • Indigenous Small Business Networking Event: Delivered in collaboration with local partners, the event engaged more than 80 representatives from First Nations-owned businesses across the region.
  • Moving Pictures Nights: In partnership with local not-for-profit small business EndCredits Film Club, seven free, family-friendly outdoor movie nights were held across the region providing entertainment and supporting local vendors.
  • Major Events Support: Through Council’s event sponsorship program, 14 major events generated an estimated $7.29 million in spending with local suppliers.
  • Fast-tracked Development Applications: The expanded initiative allows more low-risk applications to be assessed within 10 business days, reducing admin and supporting local planning and consulting firms.

Council remains committed to creating a thriving small business ecosystem and ensuring our region’s entrepreneurs, creators, and service providers are positioned for success and contribute to a vibrant, resilient Cairns.
