Cairns’ residents and visitors can celebrate the Reef Eye Ferris Wheel becoming a permanent fixture on the Esplanade for the next decade.

Council has endorsed a 10-year trustee lease with Westshell Pty Ltd to keep the Reef Eye on the Western Events Lawn.

The iconic part of the Cairns skyline and Esplanade experience.

Operating since its trial in 2019, the Reef Eye has become welcomed hundreds of thousands of riders and generated significant economic benefit for the city, contributing more than $601,000 in commission to Council since 2022.

It has become synonymous with the Cairns destination brand and continues to be loved by locals and visitors, while also strongly supported by nearby businesses.

The long-term lease provides certainty for the community and supports local employment, while ensuring value for money through an independently assessed market rental.

Westshell Pty Ltd will continue to meet all operational, safety and environmental requirements.

With this endorsement, the Reef Eye is set to shine over the Esplanade for years to come, enhancing Cairns’ vibrancy, lifestyle and tourism appeal.
