- $1.24 million Red Arrow improvement works begin 23 June
- Upgrades include new steps, drainage, and safety improvements
- Trail remains open, with alternating closures on eastern and western sides
One of Cairns’ most popular walking trails is set for a major overhaul, with a $1.24 million upgrade of the Red Arrow walking track starting on 23 June.
The works follow a detailed audit of the trail and aim to replace ageing infrastructure, improve access, and enhance safety for the thousands who use the track each week.
Safer, more accessible, and enhanced enjoyment
Mayor Amy Eden said the project reflects Council’s commitment to community wellbeing and quality recreational spaces.
“We know how much this trail means to the community and this upgrade will make it safer, more accessible, and even more enjoyable,” Mayor Eden said.
“For many people, the Red Arrow is more than just a walking track, it is a part of their routine – thousands of people trek it every week.
"These upgrades will help make sure it stays a favourite for years to come."
What’s included in the upgrade
The planned works include:
- Full renewal of the eastern track, including demolition of old steps and asphalt
- Construction of new natural porphyry stone steps and regraded paths to meet Grade 3 trail standards
- Upgraded seating, pedestrian bridges, retaining walls, and drainage
- Installation of root barriers to manage bamboo spread
- Minor upgrades to the western Red Arrow and a connecting section of the Blue Arrow walk
Access during construction
To allow work to proceed safely, either the eastern or western section of the Red Arrow will be temporarily closed at any one time, but the trail will remain open throughout the project.
A short section of the Blue Arrow, between the Red and Yellow Arrows, will also close intermittently.
Please note closure dates are subject to change as work progresses:
- Eastern track lower: 23 June to 30 July
- Eastern track upper: 23 June to 8 October
- Blue Arrow connection (intermittent closures): 2 September to 21 October
- Western track lower: 21 October to 22 November
Supporting healthy, active lifestyles
Division 7 Councillor Anna Middleton welcomed the investment.
“This upgrade is about preserving its character while making it safer and more sustainable,” Cr Middleton said.
“These works will improve the walkability of the trail and also the overall experience for residents and visitors.
We know how well-used this track is, so minimising disruption during construction has been a key priority.”
Construction is expected to be completed in November, weather permitting.
Alternative trails – including the Yellow, Green, and most of the Blue Arrow walks – will remain open throughout the works.
