Council has continued its membership with North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF) with proposed financial assistance of over $150,000 over three years. The Foundation plays a key role in driving sporting outcomes across the region and supports several of Cairns’ strategic objectives.

The Foundation delivers four core programs designed to foster and strengthen sporting participation in North Queensland:

  • The North Queensland Games – a multisport event for member Councils incorporating all ages and abilities, held biennially
  • The North Queensland Sportstar Awards – recognising and celebrating sporting excellence and achievements
  • Move It NQ Program – delivering over $600,000 in funding for physical activity programs across North Queensland through local sporting clubs and active recreation providers.
  • The North Queensland Sports Hall of Fame – recognition of athletes, coaches and administrators from the area who have made a substantial contribution to sport.

The Foundation also plays a key role in supporting a number of local priorities for Cairns.

These include positioning Cairns as the premier destination for women’s sport, contributing to the city’s 150-year celebrations, enhancing the Go Clubs support and development program, and advocating for funding and regional sport and recreation priorities.
