As Cairns celebrates Multicultural Month and the many cultures, traditions and stories that shape our region, a long-held community vision is taking a major step forward.

Construction of the Cairns Community and Multicultural Centre at White Rock is set to begin in September, marking the culmination of years of planning, consultation and community advocacy.

The new centre will provide a dedicated space for people to connect, celebrate cultural diversity, share experiences and strengthen community relationships.

Council has secured $4 million in Australian Government funding through the Growing Regions Program, to deliver the purpose-built facility, creating a permanent home for cultural, social and community activities.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said Multicultural Month was an opportunity to celebrate the diversity that strengthens our cultural identity and helps make Cairns a place where people from all backgrounds can connect and belong.

“Over the past 150 years, people from many different backgrounds have helped shape the Cairns we know and love today,” Cr Eden said.

“Multicultural Month is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the richness of our community and the many cultures that contribute to our way of life in the tropics.

“For many years now, local communities have shared a vision for a dedicated place where people can gather, celebrate culture, build connections and access support. It’s exciting to see that vision becoming a reality.

“I look forward to seeing the centre open its doors and become a welcoming community hub for people from across Cairns to come together.”

The Cairns Community and Multicultural Centre will provide a welcoming and accessible venue featuring a large multipurpose hall, meeting spaces, commercial kitchen, foyer space for art and cultural displays and an outdoor gathering area.

A State Government project to construct a new sports field on adjacent land is also expected to be underway during the first few months of the centre's construction.

Division 3 Councillor Cathy Zeiger said the project would provide a dedicated home for cultural and community activities, creating new opportunities for people to participate in community life.

“After nearly 12 years, it is wonderful to see this long-held vision for White Rock finally break ground,” Cr Zeiger said.

“The Cairns Community and Multicultural Centre will be a place for people to connect, share experiences and celebrate the diversity that makes our community so special.

“As Cairns is such a diverse region, it makes sense to bring together a community centre and a purpose-designed multicultural space, creating a facility that is truly for everyone.”

Construction will commence in September 2026, with completion expected in late 2027.
