Fresh courts, stronger community at Martyn Street Netball
Netballers across Cairns are stepping onto safer, smoother courts at Martyn Street, with the completion of a major resurfacing project designed to support the sport’s continued growth in the region.
The upgrade has renewed the outdoor Martyn Street Netball Courts, ensuring players of all ages and skill levels can enjoy a more reliable and durable playing surface for years to come. Importantly, the work was carefully timed during the Cairns Netball off-season to minimise disruption to competitions, training and club activities.
Netball is one of the fastest-growing sports in Cairns, with the Cairns Netball Association supporting a vibrant and diverse community of players — including increasing male participation — alongside a strong and dedicated volunteer base of coaches, umpires, scorers and administrators. The Martyn Street facility plays a central role in that community, hosting 16 hard courts (four covered), a clubhouse and supporting infrastructure that brings people together week after week.
To ensure the courts stand up to local conditions, a new court resurfacing treatment was trialled on select courts, incorporating improved drainage and a concrete base. The results have been excellent, delivering a strong, stable surface that supports safe play and long-term use.
The use of concrete was based on expert advice identifying it as the most durable, cost-effective and low-maintenance option for Cairns’ tropical environment. This approach means fewer disruptions, lower maintenance needs and, most importantly, safer playing conditions for the community.
Cairns Netball now has a renewed facility that reflects the passion and commitment of everyone involved, from players and families to volunteers and crews who worked hard to deliver the project at the right time.
With the resurfacing complete, Martyn Street is set to continue being a home for netball in Cairns, a place where skills are built, friendships are formed and the community comes together through sport.
