Volunteers gathered at the Fred Moule Pavilion this morning to help pack 910 Christmas hampers, spreading festive cheer to locals doing it tough over the holiday season.

The hampers were made possible thanks to the generosity of the Cairns community, which helped raise more than $94,000 for the 2025 Mayor’s Christmas Charity.

Major contributions came from Kenfrost, Kinkera, and Coles, alongside support from countless local residents and businesses.

The annual appeal provides hampers to families, the elderly, carers, and other residents who might otherwise go without on Christmas Day.

Community effort recognised

Mayor Amy Eden acknowledged the generosity of the community during a period of ongoing cost-of-living pressures.

"This has been one of our most successful fundraising efforts yet," Cr Eden said.

"It’s all about supporting those in need and ensuring everyone in the Cairns region can experience the joy of the festive season, no matter their circumstances.

“These hampers contain essential food items, festive treats, gifts for children, and small essentials that make a real difference for families facing hardship or isolation."

Volunteers pack 910 hampers

More than 100 volunteers helped pack the hampers at the Fred Moule Pavilion in the Cairns Showgrounds, ready for distribution by local charities and support agencies.

"A huge thank you to our volunteers who have given their time to prepare, pack, and deliver these hampers," Cr Eden said.

"I also want to acknowledge the support of the Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise, officers from HMAS Cairns, Brothers Rugby League Club, Northern Pride, Cairns Show Association, Coles Cairns Central, and many other local businesses who have helped make this possible.
"We also sincerely thank our media partners for their in-kind support and services. To everyone who has contributed to the appeal in any way, we thank you for your generosity and wish you a very merry Christmas."
