Libraries today are much more than places to borrow books.

They are community hubs that support lifelong learning, digital inclusion, social connection, and early childhood development.

One way Cairns families are benefiting is through the First 5 Forever, a Queensland Government initiative, coordinated by the State Library of Queensland and delivered in partnership with local government.

The program provides free, fun and engaging experiences that help families and caregivers build children’s brains and bodies through everyday learning and play.

How many families are taking part?

In 2025/26, Cairns Libraries delivered 537 First 5 Forever programs, engaging 47,139 participants across the region.

This included 510 library-based sessions attended by 17,823 people and 27 outreach programs that reached a further 29,316 participants through community events and partnerships.

The strong participation highlights the ongoing demand for free family-focused programs and services across the Cairns region.

What happened during the Smithfield Library closure?

Despite a temporary closure of Smithfield Library for refurbishment, community participation remained strong.

A standout success was the Pop-Up Library at Stratford, where library usage increased by more than 52 per cent and First 5 Forever attendance grew by 122 per cent during the Smithfield closure period.

Why does First 5 Forever matter?

Supported by a network of 19 community partnerships, the program continues to strengthen early literacy, encourage family engagement and contribute to community wellbeing.

First 5 Forever reinforces the important role libraries play in supporting Cairns families from the earliest years of a child's life, while helping children develop the foundations they need for lifelong learning.
