Cairns Regional Council has awarded a $1.27 million contract to Osborne Construction Solutions Pty Ltd to deliver a major refurbishment of Smithfield Library, the city’s second busiest library.
The $1.66 million project will modernise the 37-year-old facility, last upgraded in 2007, and is designed to create a more functional, welcoming, and flexible space for the growing northern beaches community.

Key upgrades will include new furniture and fixtures, expanded technology such as automatic book returns and improved self-service kiosks, and redesigned spaces for children and collaborative learning. The collection size will also be doubled.
Council endorsed the project as part of its 10-year Capital Works Program and says the refurbishment will extend the library’s useful life by at least 10-15 years.
The project will support local jobs and use Cairns-based subcontractors and suppliers.
Works are expected to be completed by 30 June 2026.
