Cairns has been recognised as a leading sports destination, tipped to host basketball, football and cricket as part of the 2032 Olympic program. The Queensland Government’s 2032 Delivery Plan outlines opportunities for regional areas, highlighting Cairns’ Barlow Park and Convention Centre as possible venues.

The chance to host elite matches as part of the Games program would allow local residents to get involved. It would attract players and spectators to the region, boosting the local economy.

Barlow Park has been confirmed to receive major upgrades, including a new grandstand with a seating capacity of 5,000. The improvements will not only serve the Olympics but provide legacy benefits for the region as a premier sports destination.

Council will continue to work through the details with government to maximise the benefits and opportunities for our region through the Olympics and other sporting events.
