Priority rectification works are underway across key Cairns reservoirs to maintain water quality, pressure, and reliability ahead of hotter weather and the wet season.

Cairns Regional Council crews and contractors have completed safety assessments, geotechnical surveys, and structural testing, with repair and cleaning works now progressing to return assets to full operation.

At the Brinsmead Reservoir, propping works have been completed ahead of schedule, with specialist testing underway and internal cleaning set to begin this week.

The University Reservoir (JCU) continues through temporary repairs, with the next construction phase, including hob wall works, now commencing. Geotechnical surveys are also being conducted to assess a potential site for a new reservoir near the existing one.

Meanwhile, preliminary design documentation for the Brinsmead and Bayview roof projects has been issued, with a design workshop scheduled for the week of 27 October.

These works form part of Council’s broader Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project, which focuses on strengthening network resilience and securing the city’s long-term water supply.

Council is encouraging residents to continue using water wisely as temperatures rise.

Permanent water conservation measures have been in place since 2007, and Council’s own irrigation program is adjusted in line with current restriction levels and weather conditions.
