The Historical Society Cairns North Queensland will receive $25,000 in Council funding to help celebrate the city’s 150th birthday in 2026.

While there is no specific date as such to mark 150 years of Cairns, a series of significant milestones will be celebrated throughout the year.

This will include a year-long program currently being prepared by the Historical Society Cairns North Queensland, which includes the release of an official Cairns Celebration 150 Years book, historical bulletins, website blogs and a series of exhibitions and public lectures at the Cairns Museum.

The proposed program will recognise the city and region’s history and aims to engage with community with a focus on primary and secondary school children as well as overseas students.

Along with the release of the soft cover publication, the organisation is planning six exhibitions with themes to include First Nations, early settlement, local business, multiculturalism, sustainable living, and the future.
