  • New Zealand Citizen
  • Entitlement to a Work Visa

How to apply for a job at Council

Cairns Regional Council uses OneCouncil, a self-service portal, and all applications must be submitted online through this system.

We do not consider unsolicited resumes or applications; we only accept applications for specifically advertised positions via OneCouncil.

Simply view our Current Vacancies, find the position that interests you and follow the prompts.

Each job advertisement includes contact details for a nominated contact officer. You can speak to this person for more information about the position.

You need to submit a separate application for each position you are interested in. All online applications should reach us by 11:30pm AEST on the advertised closing date.  Late applications may not be accepted.

By creating your own profile on our eRecruit portal, you can:

  • Login and view the status of jobs you have applied for;
  • Track the progress of your application through the recruitment process; and
  • Manage your own job application resume and attachments.

Selection process

To recruit the most suitable candidates, our selection process is based on merit principles and equal employment opportunity.  Applications are assessed against the key responsibilities of the job based on your qualifications, skills, ability, experience and knowledge.

Your application will be treated with utmost respect and confidentiality. The only person(s) to see your details will be members of our recruitment team, the hiring manager and the selection panel members involved in the role(s) you have applied for. All details entered into the system are confidential and cannot be accessed by unauthorised people.

We may use a combination of assessment methods to evaluate candidates, such as:

  • review of application and resume;
  • structured interview;
  • case studies / role play;
  • practical work-based skill testing;
  • written knowledge testing;
  • numeracy and literacy assessment;
  • verification of qualifications or licences;
  • verification of Working with Children and Young People (Blue Card);
  • background / directorship check;
  • pre-employment medical which may include a functional capacity assessment and drug and alcohol test;
  • national police / criminal history check; and
  • other testing relevant to the position.

Shortlisting and interviews

If you are selected for an interview, the Chair of the selection panel will contact you to arrange a time.  You must bring along any original certificates or licences that are required of the position.

Post-interview, the selection panel will conduct referee checks on their recommended candidate.

Timeframes

After applying online, you will receive an immediate acknowledgement that your application has been received.

Applicants will generally be notified of their application outcome within two to four weeks of the application closing date.
