Q. What are the opening times of the Lagoon?
A. From 6am to 9pm daily, except Wednesdays when the Lagoon is closed until midday for maintenance.

Q. How much does it cost to swim at the Lagoon?
A. The Lagoon is free to the public.

Q. Are there lockers at the Lagoon?
A. Yes, there are paid lockers by the Lagoon amenities block.

Q. Are there first aid facilities at the Lagoon?
A. Yes, please see the lifeguards on duty.

Q. What are the conditions of use of the Lagoon?
A. The Lagoon has signage that sets out the conditions of use. This includes:

  • No running, diving or jumping
  • Children to be supervised at all times
  • No glass
  • No alcohol
  • No inflatable objects or ball games
  • No smoking
  • Bathing attire must be worn at all times

Q. What about stingers and crocodiles?
A. The Lagoon has been designed to prevent stingers and crocodiles from getting into the water. A vertical concrete wall separates the Lagoon from the inlet providing a physical barrier and stopping seawater getting into the swimming area.

Q. What are the opening times of Muddy's playground?
A. 9am to 7pm every day of the year, including public holidays. Sections of Muddy's are closed for maintenance on Tuesday mornings until midday. Council aims to have at least half the playground available for use during scheduled maintenance.

Q. What are the opening times of the Fun Ship playground?
A. All day, every day of the year, including public holidays.

Q. What are the opening times of the Healing Garden playground?
A. All day, every day of the year, including public holidays.

Q. How much does it cost to access the playgrounds?
A. The playgrounds are free to access.

Q. How much does it cost to access the parklands?
A. The parklands are free for casual use, however if you have a group of 50 or more people, or require exclusive use of an area, you need to book (see Venue Hire and Licences).

Q. Can we swim on the natural beach in front of the Lagoon and along the foreshore?
A. Swimming in this area is not allowed due to crocodiles and marine stingers inhabiting the area. Attacks by crocodiles or marine stingers can cause injury or death.

Q. Is there an off-leash area where I can exercise my dog?
A. The area to the very north of the Cairns Esplanade, called Coconut Grove, is a designated off-leash area.

Q. What are the flowering trees around the Lagoon?
A. The trees are Cassia Rainbow Showers.

Q. What hours are the BBQ facilities in operation?
A. BBQ facilities are free for casual use. BBQs are turned on between 6am and 9pm every day.

Q. Do we need to book to use BBQ facilities?
A. BBQ facilities are free for casual use, however if you have a group of 50 or more people, or require exclusive use of a BBQ area, you need to book and fees will apply. See Venue Hire and Licences for further information.

Q. When are the beach volleyball courts open?
A. Daily from 9am to 9.30pm except Tuesdays when they are closed from 9am until 4pm for maintenance.

Q. How much does it cost to use the beach volleyball courts?
A. The beach volleyball courts are free for casual use, however if you have a group of 50 or more people, or require exclusive use of the area, you need to book. See Venue Hire and Licences.

Q. Will we need to bring our own ball?
A. Yes you will.

Q. Are there first aid facilities at the Cairns Esplanade?
A. Yes. Please see the lifeguards on duty at the Lagoon.

Q.  What about security in the area?
A. Security guards patrol the Esplanade and foreshore area. Cairns Regional Council security cameras are in place throughout the area and are monitored 24 hours a day.

Q.  Where is car parking available?
A. There are car parks located along the length of the Esplanade and on-street car parking spaces throughout the Cairns CBD. Parking restrictions and fees may apply.

A. You can check with the Lagoon lifeguards to see if your item has been handed in.

Q. Where are the toilets?
A. There are toilet blocks at:

  • Fogarty Park near the bus bays
  • Lagoon amenities building
  • Muddy's playground - southern edge
  • Muddy's playground - near the cafe
  • Near the beach volleyball courts
  • McKenzie Street parkland
  • Fun Ship parkland

Q. Where are the showers?
A. There are showers in the amenities block near the Lagoon, and outdoor showers next to the Lagoon and the beach volleyball courts.
