Step 1

Fill out the Request for Testing Form ( PDF, 0.14 MB ). Email your completed form to laboratory@cairns.qld.gov.au or post to the Laboratory Services building. Once the application is processed, you’ll receive an acknowledgment email.

Step 2

Pick up your sample bottle(s) from the Laboratory Services building where they will be ready for collection by 4pm the following business day after receiving your acknowledgement email. You will also be provided an instruction on how to sample and a Chain of Custody form to be completed (refer to step 3).

You can pick up your sample containers at the rear reception (access via the driveway to the left of the building). The lab is open 8am – 4pm, Monday – Friday (closed public holidays).

Alternatively, we offer a mail out service which allows the sample bottles to be sent directly to you. Fees may apply.

Step 3

Collect your sample by following the instructions provided to you. The Chain of Custody form must be filled out.

For those tests that require more complex sampling, an instruction will be left with the sample bottles to contact the Laboratory Services building for specific instructions.

Further information on samples can be found on our samples page.

Step 4

Return your sample to the Laboratory Services building within the specified time frame on the specified day, and with the completed Chain of Custody form.

Samples must be received within 24 hours of collection. Results from samples submitted outside of this specified time frame cannot be guaranteed to be accurate and reliable.

Once we have received your sample at the lab, you will receive a Sample Acknowledgement by email.

Step 5

When your results are ready, the Laboratory Services team will email you an invoice. This can be paid online or in person at a Council Customer Service Centre or at the Laboratory Services building. Payment over the phone is also accepted.

If payment is not received by the due date, the testing will be cancelled and the sample discarded.

Once your invoice has been paid, you will receive your results via email within 10 business days. If you don’t receive your results within this time, please contact the lab.
