Free School Recycling
The Council invites all schools in the Cairns Region to register and join the CRC Waste Education Recycling Program.
This program provides a complimentary recycling service aimed at lowering schools' waste disposal costs. Cairns Regional Council is dedicated to decreasing the volume of waste materials sent to landfill annually from schools by offering a no-cost recycling service.
To participate in the program, schools are encouraged to:
- Commit to supporting co-mingled recycling throughout the school.
- Engage in the Council's Waste education program to promote proper recycling practices and minimise contamination.
- Use the provided 240L bins exclusively for co-mingled recyclable materials at your school.
- Agree to ongoing follow-up from the Council regarding the service; this helps your school monitor the proper use of recycling bins.

Cairns Regional Council is committed to reducing waste to landfill and improving our resource recovery efforts, this includes our regional schools helping play their part in monitoring usage of this free service.
Council collection vehicles are fitted with cameras that detect bins containing non-recyclable items (contamination). Bins with significant contamination will be tagged and left uncollected until the next service, provided the contamination has been removed. Your school will be informed and requested to lower contamination levels and conduct ongoing monitoring. If contamination persists, the service may be discontinued.
