Scottsdale is regarded as an upscale tourist and shopping destination and as a representation of western American style. The tourism industry is Scottsdale's primary employer, accounting for 39% of the city's workforce. The city of Scottsdale by itself is home to more than 70 resorts and hotels, boasting over 16,700 hotel rooms. This large hospitality market primarily caters to a higher-end, white-collar demographic.
In 2012, Scottsdale attracted over 8.9 million visitors to the city, providing an economic impact of over $3.39 billion.
Scottsdale is a city in the eastern part of Maricopa County, Arizona, United States, adjacent to Phoenix. It's bordered to the west by Phoenix and Paradise Valley, to the north by Carefree, to the south by Tempe, and to the east by Fountain Hills and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
Scottsdale's climate is arid. Winters are mild and summers are very hot. The lowest temperature ever recorded in the city is 19.0°F (−7.2°C), on 20 February 1955, and the highest temperature ever recorded was 122.0°F (50.0°C), on 26 June 1990.
The local time of Scottsdale is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) -7 which is 17 hours behind Cairns.
The population of Scottsdale is approximately 255,000 (2018).
The agreement with Scottsdale was signed on 6 July 1987.
The proclamation reads:
'Whereas the Scottsdale Sister Cities Committee and its counterpart in Cairns, Queensland, Australia have formally agreed to establish a Sister City relationship between our two cities, and whereas this new relationship will promote friendship, goodwill and understanding between the people of the United States and the people of Australia, and especially between the people of Cairns and Scottsdale, and whereas the City of Scottsdale is honored to be chosen as a sister city to such an outstanding community as Cairns, a beautiful resort city of approximately 80,000 people on Australia's tropical northern coast, the site of the 1988 International Sister Cities Convention and World Forum, and whereas a delegation from Cairns is visiting Scottsdale July 19 through 22 to formalise this new Sister Cities relationship. Now, therefore, I, Herbert R Drinkwater, do hereby declare July 19 to 22 1987 to be Cairns Sister City Days in Scottsdale and urge my fellow citizens to join me in welcoming His Worship the Mayor of the City of Cairns, Ald Ron E Davis AM, members of the Cairns City Council and delegates from the Cairns Sister Cities Committee; and to join me in extending to these representatives our friendship and hospitality and in expressing our gratitude and best wishes to all the citizens of Cairns, our new Sister City. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Seal of the City of Scottsdale this 6th day of July 1987.'
- 2022 - Cairns Sketchfest Exhibition. Cairns Urban Sketchfest involved an exhibition of urban sketches from Cairns and Scottsdale. The exhibition was presented at Court House Gallery in September 2022 and then travelled to the Scottsdale Artists’ School for a showing in April 2023.
