Cairns Historical Society
A message from Cairns Historical Society & Cairns Museum President
For more than sixty years, the Cairns Historical Society and Cairns Museum have cared for the stories, photographs and objects that capture our region’s social history. Our members and volunteers have worked to preserve the memories of those who built this community and shaped life in the tropics.
In 2026, Cairns celebrates 150 years since the establishment of the colonial township, a milestone led by Cairns Regional Council and embraced by the whole community. As part of these celebrations, the Historical Society and Museum are presenting a year-long program of exhibitions, lectures and events that explore the people, places and moments that have defined our city.
From pioneering families and local industry to political life, art and everyday Cairns life, each story reflects a shared sense of identity and connection to place. Many of these exhibitions and events have been developed in partnership with community groups, local families and individual storytellers, which is something we’re very proud of.
This anniversary is not only a chance to look back. It is also a moment to recognise the living story of Cairns, a diverse and resilient community that continues to grow, change and carry its history forward.
