Shift by Zane Saunders with Bonemap
Exhibition: Friday 23 August – Sunday 1 September 2024, 6pm each night of Cairns Festival
Launch: 6pm, Friday 23 August
A poetic film about the transformation and shapeshifting of human spaces
Shift provides a creative response to the current adaptation of the former town hall at 51 The Esplanade, Cairns City, completed in 1913 to serve as Mulgrave Shire Council Chambers, from one civic use to another.
Zane Saunders interprets space and time intuitively, a process that allows the hidden dimensions of time, place, and space to come forward and manifest through his actions as performance art. With abstract meaning, the performances provide clues to the unacknowledged presence and experience of being in a specific location - in situ. The resulting photomedia artworks, created through a collaboration with Zane and Bonemap’s Rebecca Youdell and Russell Milledge, capture the moment of architectural transition. Photography and video artworks document the artists brief presence within the dismantled rooms and building facade.
Zane Saunders lives in Kuranda, Far North Queensland and is an Indigenous visual artist and performer, a descendant of Butchulla, Gunggari and Jarrowia People. Bonemap’s Rebecca Youdell and Russell Milledge are partners who collaborate in producing dance, visual arts, and media arts.
Projection in Mulgrave Gallery Courtyard each night of Cairns Festival
