Stephen Eastaugh is a mixed-media artist inspired by landscape, travel, and the human condition. His work explores the interconnectedness of existence and movement—two elements he finds mysterious, captivating, and worth exploring. Over the past 35 years, his travels have taken him to nearly 100 countries across all continents.
Travel, geography, landscape, and the concept of dis/location have continuously influenced his practice, which has been shaped by research and the creation of work in response to his global experiences. Eastaugh has set up studios in diverse and extreme environments—from a Russian icebreaker in the North Pole to a science station in East Antarctica, along with numerous other locations in between. One such residency was with the Tanks Art Centre in 2012 so it is a privilege to have him back to Cairns and exhibiting in the Mulgrave Gallery 13 years on and many countries later.
Unanchored World
The launch features a screening of Unanchored World - a documentary by Malcolm McKinnon following Eustaugh's journey to Kuala Lumpur onboard an international cargo container vessel (running time – 12:34).
