Grants and funding
Inward grants and external funding play an important role in delivering projects and services for the Cairns community.
Council both:
- Seeks funding for major projects
- Supports the community to access funding opportunities
Council actively pursues external funding to:
- Deliver essential infrastructure
- Support economic growth
- Improve community facilities
This funding helps reduce the cost burden on ratepayers while enabling important projects to proceed.
Funding secured
Council regularly secures grant funding from state and federal governments for projects across Cairns.
These investments support:
- Infrastructure delivery
- Community facilities
- Economic development
The following projects have secured recent state or federal funding and are aligned with Council-endorsed Advocacy Priorities.
The Australian and Queensland Governments have jointly committed a total of $390 million to deliver the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project - a critical investment in the region’s future. This National Water Grid project is funded by the Australian and Queensland governments and delivered in partnership with Cairns Regional Council.
Council successfully secured approximately $850,000 in funding under the Australian Government’s Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program (rPPP) Stream One – Precinct Development & Planning for its Major Events and Sporting Precinct Concept. The project targets the development of a comprehensive masterplan for the precinct encompassing Barlow Park, the Cairns Showgrounds, and surrounding community sporting facilities. The proposal is designed to unlock the site’s full potential as a premier regional hub, guiding future investment and long-term planning. This funding will enable Council to establish an evidence-based framework for creating a vibrant sporting and events precinct that supports community engagement, regional economic activation, and strategic infrastructure delivery.
Council successfully secured $4 million in funding from the Federal Government's Growing Regions Program. The Cairns Community and Multicultural Centre will deliver social facilities and key support and outreach services for residents of the White Rock and surrounding areas, as well as Cairns' diverse multicultural community.
Council successfully secured $5 million in funding from the Federal Government's Growing Regions Program. The project will deliver Stage 3 of the Redlynch Community Sporting Precinct including two new rectangular fields, an oval field, amenities, internal roads, and parking, providing vital sport and leisure facilities for residents in the western suburbs of Cairns.
As part of the Cyclone Jasper recovery, Council officers worked closely with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) to formulate Council’s official Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) submissions, including for Reconstruction of Essential Public Assets (REPA) funding.
