Those involved in the 2025 Understory Film Festival

Far North Queensland’s premier short film festival completed a successful 2025 program at the Tanks Arts Centre, reinforcing Cairns’ reputation as a leader in regional screen events and supporting the growth of the region’s creative industries.

The official wrap-up report was presented to Councillors at today’s Ordinary Meeting.

Across nine sessions and events held in July, October and November, the 12th Understory Film Festival attracted 1,490 attendees, including more than 430 ticketed registrations.

The program delivered professional development, industry networking, youth development pathways and touring outcomes, while engaging eight Queensland businesses and creating 28 Queensland jobs.

Highlights included the Next Level: Song to Screen Workshop Series music video, the Understory High student film program, and the flagship screening and awards event, which drew more than 500 people and screened 24 finalist films from across the region.

Major awards included:

  • Best Film – Tammy Tooth by Rachel Terry and Tnee Dyer
  • Jonathan M. Shiff Productions Best Emerging Filmmaker – Scotomo by James Panevin
  • Best Documentary – Two is Better by Kerry Balzarolo
  • Best Animation – Beyond the Waves by Oliver Marsden, Karen Jackson and the ARC Creative Ensemble


The festival aligns with Council’s Corporate Plan 2025-2030, strengthening Cairns’ position as a significant regional screen centre and a hub for inclusive, locally driven storytelling.
