One million hours of local effort for Cairns’ water future

Cairns is celebrating a major milestone in the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 project, with the works officially surpassing one million hours since construction began in July 2024.

Behind the numbers are people from our community. More than 1,100 workers have contributed to the project so far, with over 80 per cent of the workforce living locally in Cairns. Local businesses are also playing a key role, with more than $100 million invested locally, including support for First Nations businesses. Progress on site continues, with more than 25 kilometres of pipeline already installed and major infrastructure taking shape at the water treatment plant.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden Cairns Water Security Stage 1 celebrates major one million hour milestone.said the milestone reflects the community effort behind the project and the importance of planning for the future.

“This milestone shows we are taking responsible, long-term action to secure Cairns’ water future and support our growing community,” Cr Eden said.

As work continues toward completion later this year, the project team will keep working closely with residents, businesses and stakeholders to ensure the benefits of this important investment are shared across the region.

This National Water Grid project is funded by the Australian and Queensland governments and delivered in partnership with Cairns Regional Council.
