Upgrades for kerb and channel and shoulder sealing

Cairns Regional Council has committed more than $2.3 million to upgrade kerb and channel and shoulder sealing across 33 sites as part of its annual renewal program.

The Kerb and Channel and Shoulder Sealing Renewal Program targets aged and damaged infrastructure that no longer meets community expectations.

Common issues include spalling concrete, significant cracking, misalignment and ponding water – defects that can reduce drainage efficiency and lead to sediment build-up, weed growth and road pavement deterioration.

Council undertook a comprehensive condition assessment of its entire 1,641-kilometre kerb and channel network in 2023.

That data, combined with community feedback and customer requests, was used to identify and prioritise the locations most in need of renewal.

The program is part of Council’s broader commitment to maintaining high-quality infrastructure that meets the needs of a growing region.
