Want to give old items a second life, learn new skills, snap up a bargain or simply enjoy a free day out with the family?
Cairns’ residents and visitors are invited to the 2026 Trash to Treasure event on Saturday 8 August, where creativity, sustainability and community come together for a fun-filled day of hands-on activities, local stalls and entertainment.
From learning how to repair and repurpose everyday items to finding unique bargains at the Buy Back Shop, the event is packed with ideas to help households reduce waste, save money and make the most of the things they already have.
Visitors can explore interactive workshops, browse local market stalls, enjoy live entertainment and discover practical ways to give old items a new life instead of sending them to landfill.
One of the day's highlights will be the Reuse, Rethink, Repurpose Competition, where local schools and early learning centres will proudly display imaginative creations made from materials that would otherwise have ended up in landfill.

Mayor Amy Eden said the event was about empowering people to see waste differently.
“Trash to Treasure is one of those events where everyone walks away with something. You might pick up a bargain, learn a new skill, find inspiration for your next project or simply discover a better way to make the most of the things you already have," Cr Eden said.
"When we choose to repair instead of replace, donate instead of discard, or find a new purpose for something we already own, we're reducing waste and helping protect our environment.
"I'm always inspired by the creativity of our local students and early learning centres. Their competition entries remind us that some of the best ideas come from looking at everyday items in a completely new way."
Whether you're hunting for a bargain, looking for your next upcycling project or just wanting an enjoyable day out, Trash to Treasure offers plenty of inspiration for people of all ages.
