Cairns residents are being encouraged to get disaster-ready before severe weather season, with a free community event offering practical advice, emergency preparedness resources and the opportunity to connect with local emergency services.
Get Ready Emergency Services Day will be held on Saturday 10 October from 9am to 12pm at Esplanade Plaza, as part of Get Ready Queensland Week 2026.
The free family-friendly event will feature disaster preparedness displays, emergency service demonstrations, a sausage sizzle and activities for all ages.
Learn how to prepare for severe weather

Residents can meet local emergency services personnel, ask questions and learn simple steps to prepare for storm surge, flooding, cyclones and other severe weather events.
Mayor Amy Eden said the event was a practical way for residents to prepare before disaster season begins.
“Disaster preparedness starts at home, and Get Ready Emergency Services Day is a great opportunity for Cairns residents to take action before the season begins,” Mayor Eden said.
“Whether you are a long-time local, new to Cairns, retired, studying, caring for family or living alone, now is the time to know your risk, make a plan and pack an emergency kit.
“Storm surge, flooding and cyclones are real risks in our region. A little preparation now can make a big difference to your safety, your household and the people around you when severe weather strikes.”
Small steps can make a big difference
“Preparedness saves lives. Having drinking water, food, medications and essential supplies ready, and knowing where to go if you need to leave, helps households respond more safely and recover more quickly,” Mayor Eden said.
“Our community is resilient and we look out for one another, but resilience starts with action. Come along to Get Ready Emergency Services Day, make your plan and get ready today.”
