Cairns Regional Council has seized seven German Shepherd type dogs following an alleged attack at the Red Beret Hotel in Redlynch on Sunday afternoon.
It is alleged the dogs escaped from a parked vehicle and attacked an employee of the hotel in the car park.
The incident was subsequently reported to Council.
Following a tip‑off from a member of the community, Council officers – supported by Queensland Police – attended a Cairns address at approximately 9.30am this morning, where the dogs were located and seized.
Council considers this matter very serious and is continuing investigations to determine the appropriate legal process prior to taking further action.
In the interim, the dogs will be retained by Council to ensure there is no ongoing risk to public safety.
Council maintains a zero-tolerance approach to serious dog‑related incidents and reminds dog owners they are responsible for their pets’ behaviour.
Dogs must be under effective control at all times. This includes being walked on a lead, unless in a designated off‑leash area, and being kept within an appropriate and secure yard or home to prevent their escape.
Anyone who is the victim of, or witnesses, a dog attack is urged to contact Council immediately on 1300 692 247. Council’s Animal Management Team operates 24 hours a day and can respond promptly.
Early reporting improves the likelihood of officers locating offending animals and gathering critical information to support further investigation.
