Community donations help more than 100 joeys

More than $3,000 raised through Council's Free Green Waste campaign will help The Agile Project continue its work rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing native wildlife across Far North Queensland.

Local residents donated $3,015.45 through the initiative, helping support more than 100 joeys currently in care.

Thousands of people took advantage of the free service at Council's transfer stations to prepare their properties ahead of the wet season.

Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said the annual campaign continues to deliver positive environmental and community outcomes.

“Every year, our Free Green Waste campaigns encourage residents to clean up their yards, while also giving back to organisations that do incredible work in our community,” Cr Eden said.

"The volunteers at The Agile Project give their time, energy and expertise to protect our unique wildlife, often around the clock. This donation is a small way of supporting that commitment."

The Agile Project volunteer Rachel Blok said the donation would make a significant difference to the organisation's wildlife care program.

"Thank you to Council and the community for this generous donation and for helping raise awareness for a cause we are so passionate about," Ms Blok said.

"With more than 100 joeys currently in care and formula costs of around $2,500 a month, this donation will make a real difference to the wildlife we support.

"We're entirely volunteer-run, so every dollar goes directly towards saving wildlife and strengthening community awareness of our native species."

Voluntary donations were collected at Council's waste transfer stations during the February and May Free Green Waste disposal periods.
